ProPublica’s Documenting Hate Initiative Continues to Grow

Led by independent nonprofit newsroom ProPublica, the Documenting Hate initiative comes as a response to the upsurge in hate crimes since the 2016 election and the lack of reliable national data on these kinds of incidents. With a growing list of participants that now encompasses over 50 media organizations, including the New York Times, Univision, and The Root along with schools and civil rights organizations, the effort has an ambitious goal to promote “a national understanding and conversation about hate-crimes and bias.”

Bustle's Mobiledoc Helps News Orgs Post to Articles to News, Platforms

While news organizations have embraced platform efforts like Google AMP and Facebook Instant Articles to reach readers, the new platforms share a penchant for complicated and headache inducers. Bustle, however, has created new platform, Mobiledoc, an open-source article format that makes it easier for publishers to push their content to new formats and platforms. Mobiledoc is so portable because it stores only the content of posts, not their design.
